One of the misconceptions we have encountered around Project-Based Learning is the idea that once the challenge has been launched, the teacher simply steps aside and lets students figure everything out.
That has never been the approach in PBL.
In fact, some of the most effective PBL experiences we have been part of include plenty of direct instruction, modeling, reading, demonstrations, guided practice, and formative assessment.
The difference is that now students have a reason to learn it.
On Day 1, we launched a challenge. Students encountered a problem, began thinking about an audience and purpose, and started asking questions.
Day 2 is where we begin turning that curiosity into knowledge.
Instead of starting with:
“Here is what you need to learn today.”
We can begin with:
“What do we need to understand if we are going to solve this problem well?”
That small shift can make traditional instruction feel very different.
On Day 2, our goal is not to teach students everything they will eventually need.
Our goal is to identify the most important foundational knowledge and skills students need to begin making sense of the challenge.
We think of this as just-in-time learning.
Students encounter a need.
We provide instruction, resources, experiences, and support.
Students begin using that new knowledge to think more deeply about the challenge.
The project creates the reason for the learning. Instruction gives students the tools to do something with it.
After launching a challenge, we often ask students:
What do we already know?
What do we think we know?
What do we need to know?
What questions do we have?
What skills might we need to solve this problem?
This does two things.
First, it makes student thinking visible.
Second, it helps us connect the curriculum we already know students need to learn with questions students now have a reason to answer.
This is an important distinction: the Need-to-Know list does not replace the curriculum.
Students do not have to magically identify every standard, concept, or skill they need to learn. We are still the instructional designers.
Their questions simply help us create a bridge between the challenge and the content.
This is where familiar teaching practices fit naturally into PBL.
We might use:
A short mini-lesson
A demonstration
A text, article, or video
Explicit vocabulary instruction
Guided practice
Worked examples
A hands-on investigation
A primary source
A simulation
A discussion
Teacher modeling
There is nothing inherently “non-PBL” about direct instruction.
The question is not:
“Am I allowed to teach this in PBL?”
The better question is:
“What do my students need from me right now so they can move forward?”
Sometimes the answer is exploration.
Sometimes it is collaboration.
And sometimes the most appropriate answer is simply:
Teach them.
One thing we have learned is that it is easy for the project to disappear once content instruction begins.
We launch an exciting problem on Day 1—and then spend the next several days teaching as though the challenge never happened.
We try to avoid that.
Instead, we continually reconnect the learning to the larger purpose.
After a lesson, we might ask:
How could this help us with our challenge?
What can we explain now that we couldn't explain yesterday?
Does this new information change any of our original thinking?
What new questions do we have?
These quick connections help students see that the lesson isn't separate from the project.
It is helping them become more capable of solving it.
Day 2 also gives us an important opportunity for formative assessment.
Before students begin deeper investigation, we want to know whether they have enough foundational understanding to move forward successfully.
That doesn't require a test.
It might be:
An exit ticket
A quick sketch or model
A short explanation
A turn-and-talk
A concept sort
A quick problem
A response to the driving question
An update to the Need-to-Know list
The goal is simple:
What do students understand now, and what do they still need from us?
That information helps determine what happens next.
Day 2 may look more teacher-directed than other parts of the PBL process, but students can still begin developing and demonstrating Portrait of a Graduate competencies.
Critical Thinker — Students connect new information to the challenge, evaluate what they understand, and identify gaps in their knowledge.
Effective Communicator — Students explain emerging understanding, ask questions, discuss ideas, and use new academic language.
Creative Innovator — Students begin considering how new knowledge might open possibilities for solving the challenge.
Reflective and Future Focused — Students monitor what they know, recognize what they still need to learn, and determine their next steps.
Global Citizen — When appropriate to the challenge, students begin using new knowledge to better understand the people, communities, environments, or perspectives affected by the problem.
The important word here is opportunity.
Simply participating in a lesson does not automatically develop these competencies. We have to intentionally create moments where students use, demonstrate, and eventually reflect on them.
We think about Day 2 as a simple cycle:
1. Revisit the Challenge
Remind students what they are trying to accomplish.
2. Surface the Need to Know
What knowledge or skills are we missing?
3. Teach Something That Matters
Provide the mini-lesson, demonstration, reading, investigation, or guided practice students need.
4. Apply It Back to the Challenge
How does today's learning help us?
5. Check Understanding
What do students understand now? What still needs attention?
And then we repeat that cycle as needed.
If you are experimenting with PBL, Day 2 doesn't require you to throw away the lesson you already planned.
Keep the lesson.
Just give it a stronger why.
Start by reconnecting students to the challenge.
Teach the content they need.
Then finish by asking:
“How does what we learned today help us solve our problem?”
That one question can begin changing the relationship between learning content and using content for a purpose.
Day 1 creates the need to know.
Day 2 begins satisfying it.
Small bites. Big impact.
