Day 1 gave students a reason to learn.
Day 2 began giving them the background knowledge and skills they needed.
Now it's time to do something with that learning.
Day 3 of our 10-Day Recipe is about deepening the learning.
Students begin moving beyond simply acquiring information. They use what they're learning to investigate, model, analyze, discuss, explain, practice, and make sense of ideas.
Our 10-Day Recipe is intentionally structured. Each day has a primary job. That doesn't mean learning stops neatly at the end of a class period. Students may need additional instruction, practice, or support along the way. But giving each day a clear purpose keeps the project moving and makes PBL manageable.
The idea is simple:
Day 2 builds the foundation. Day 3 puts that foundation to work.
One question can guide our planning for Day 3:
What experience will help my students understand this content deeply enough to use it?
Depending on the content, students might conduct an investigation, analyze data, compare texts or sources, work through a mathematical task, construct a model, use a simulation, participate in a structured discussion, or solve a problem.
The particular activity isn't what makes this PBL.
The connection to the larger challenge does.
Students should understand why they're doing the work and how today's learning is helping them become more capable of eventually addressing the challenge they encountered on Day 1.
Teach it.
Day 2 isn't the only day we're allowed to teach new content.
In fact, once students begin using their knowledge, we often discover what they don't understand.
A science investigation might expose a misconception. A primary source might require additional historical context. A mathematical task might reveal a missing skill.
That's when we respond.
Provide the mini-lesson. Model the skill. Introduce the vocabulary. Work through another example. Then send students back into the learning.
Just-in-time instruction isn't less teaching. It's teaching when students have a reason to need it.
That doesn't mean withholding essential knowledge until students struggle. We still anticipate what students will need and intentionally teach it. We simply remain responsive to needs that emerge along the way.
Teach. Try. Notice. Respond. Keep going.
This is an important distinction.
Students can complete an experiment without understanding what happened. They can finish a simulation without recognizing the pattern. They can complete an activity without understanding why any of it matters.
So Day 3 needs time for sense-making.
Ask:
What did you notice?
What patterns are emerging?
What does the evidence suggest?
What can you explain now that you couldn't explain before?
How might today's learning eventually help us with our challenge?
That last question is especially important.
We aren't asking students to solve the challenge yet. We're helping them recognize that the learning they're doing today is preparing them to do so.
Before students leave, ask them to capture one important piece of learning or evidence from the day that might matter later.
It could be an observation, data point, diagram, calculation, quotation, conclusion, photograph, or even a new question.
A notebook, shared document, project folder, evidence board, or digital portfolio can all work.
The tool isn't important.
The habit is:
Don't just complete the activity. Capture what you learned from it.
This gives students something to draw upon when they begin investigating the actual challenge.
Day 3 naturally creates opportunities to practice several Portrait of a Graduate competencies without trying to force every competency into the experience.
Critical Thinking — Analyze information, interpret evidence, identify patterns, and draw conclusions.
Communication — Explain thinking, discuss evidence, ask questions, and make developing understanding visible.
Collaboration — Learn with others, compare ideas, conduct investigations, and construct understanding together.
The goal isn't to attach a competency label to an activity.
It's to create opportunities for students to actually practice those competencies.
Keep Day 3 manageable with four moves:
1. CONNECT
Reconnect today's learning to the larger challenge.
Why might we need to understand this?
2. LEARN & EXPERIENCE
Investigate, analyze, model, discuss, practice, solve, or explore. Provide additional instruction when needed.
3. MAKE SENSE
Talk, think, explain, compare, and draw conclusions.
What do we understand now?
4. CAPTURE
Save one important piece of learning or evidence.
What did we learn today that might help us later?
That's it.
If you're trying this tomorrow, don't redesign your entire lesson.
Take something you already teach and ask:
Where do my students actually get to use what they're learning?
Create an opportunity for them to do that.
Then end with:
What do we understand now that we couldn't explain before?
Have students capture one piece of learning that might matter later.
That's Day 3.
Day 1: Launch the Challenge
Give students a reason to learn.
Day 2: Build Background Knowledge
Give students what they need to begin.
Day 3: Deepen the Learning
Give students opportunities to use what they're learning.
Next, we'll turn that growing knowledge toward the specific challenge:
Day 4: Investigate the Problem.
In Tapas terms, Day 2 gave us the ingredients. Day 3 gets us cooking.
We aren't shortening PBL by removing the learning. We're making the learning more intentional.
